Foundations of Rotational Axis

Overview & Focus

• Goal & Target Audience: Week 1 of a 4-week program designed for skaters of all levels. It focuses on enforcing basics, understanding rotation, maintaining axis control, and proper weight transfer.

• Concept of Axis: Described as a straight "laser beam" running from the top of the head through the body trunk and down out of the feet. Maintaining this straight, tall alignment without arching the lower back or hinging the hips is key for safe jumps and landings.

Key Points and Exercises

[00:00] Introduction to the Program

  • Overview of the 4-week jump preparation series designed to help skaters maintain axis and transfer weight during air rotation.

[01:05] Kneeling Axis Awareness Drills

  • Understanding Axis [01:16]: Visualizing a central "laser beam" line running from the top of the head through the feet.

  • Axis Tapping & Posture Check [02:00]: Tapping the top of the head while keeping a flat lower back, long neck, and strong core support.

  • Tipping Away from Axis [02:32]: Experimenting with leaning off-axis (forward, back, side-to-side) and returning to center, including knee lifts for balance.

  • Orbiting the Axis (Eyes Closed) [03:14]: Circling the body around the axis line with eyes closed, followed by turning the head while keeping the axis upright.

[09:34] Standing Axis & Ankle Warm-ups

  • Standing Tipping & Orbiting [00:09:48]: Repeating tipping and circular orbiting movements while standing to feel axis alignment down to the feet.

  • Vertical Ankle Bends & Bounces [00:05:32]: Bending in the ankles and bouncing softly without hinging hips or losing posture.

  • Heel Bounce / Ankle Firing [00:06:27]: Quick, small heel lifts on the balls of the feet to activate ankle stability under central axis control.

[07:18] Standing Rotational Drills

  • Square Arm Rotations [00:07:23]: Rotating in both directions with arms extended square to the sides, progressing to closing eyes and speeding up.

  • Head Circles While Rotating [00:08:06]: Rolling the head in circles to test axis stability during motion.

  • Walking Rotations with Dynamic Arm Positions [00:08:52]: Walking in a circle with eyes closed, transitioning arm positions from traditional wind-up, to square, to opposite arms in both directions.

[11:21] Low-Impact Hopping & Quarter-Turn Exercises

  • Straight-Leg Quarter-Turn Hops [11:28]: Executing small quarter turns with minimal knee bend using square arm holds, with eyes open and closed.

  • Full Circle Quarter-Turn Hops [12:14]: Performing full-turn quarter hops with arms set against the direction of rotation.

  • Rebound Hop Circles [12:48]: Continuous quick bounces on the balls of the feet while traveling around a circle, testing open vs. closed eyes.

[14:00] Wind-Up Mechanics & Rib Pulls

  • Square Shoulder Wind-Up Hops [14:12]: Performing quarter-turn hops while maintaining square shoulders and keeping the lower ribs pulled in.

  • Rib Closing & Opening Hops [15:21]: Hopping in circles while tapping the lower ribs closed into a tight position and pulling back open to speed up rotational awareness.

[16:43] Experimental "Into the Wind" Drills

  • Hopping into the Direction of Rotation [16:51]: Holding opposite arm positions ("into the wind") and practicing closing and opening movements during hops.

  • Eyes-Closed Unnatural Rotation Challenges [18:00]: Performing "into the wind" hopping rotations with eyes closed in both natural and unnatural rotation directions to build sensory adaptation.
